Name Change For Borough (June 12, 2008)

Nuneaton Borough has changed its name to Nuneaton Town.

Nuneaton Borough Football Club has gone out of existence and from the 2008/09 season the club will play under the Nuneaton Town banner.

Following Boro's financial problems of late, forcing them to go into liquidation last week, the Football Association and the club held talks to discuss the best way forward for Nuneaton and its footballing future.

And it was agreed between the two parties to turn back time and revive the name Nuneaton Town for the foreseeable future.

It was back in 1937 that the club changed names when the old Town side disbanded and within 48 hours Boro took their place.

Meanwhile, former directors of Nuneaton Borough have claimed the borough council was a major factor in the club's demise.

Former chairman Roger Stanford's statement claims much of the problem went back to Nuneaton and Bedworth Borough Council's lack of support for a new stadium at Eliot Park.

He explained: "Many may recall our efforts to relocate to Eliot Park. Planning permission was applied for and refused, stating that car parking, methane and the proximity of nearby chemical storage were problematical.

"Public meetings, environmental studies, and the planning application all had to be paid for.

"This procedure proved to be very costly, but we feel sure many problems could have been prevented had the relocation been allowed to go ahead.

"The decision made by the council at that time, in our opinion, had a significant effect on the club's predicament possibly resulting in the position we find ourselves in today.

"Anyone driving along the A444 - Eliot Park can clearly see various office blocks, car showrooms and houses are now built on the site in question; parking, chemicals, etc, is obviously no longer a problem.

"In our opinion, the council failed to see the larger picture which would have been of massive benefit to the club and the town.

"Fortunately for many other football clubs, their local councils did and they've got, or are getting, excellent new stadiums, eg Leigh, Workington, Telford, Burton Albion, Worcester, Hinckley and soon to be, even a town the size of Atherstone."
