Big Name Joins Alfreton Town (June 11, 2008)

Nicky Law, manager of Conference Square North club Alfreton Town, has produced a ‘big’ signing in every sense of the word when he landed highly-regarded striker Leo Fortune-West.

The 6’ 4’’ target man becomes Alfreton’s sixth new face of the summer and Reds boss Law was delighted to have captured the former Doncaster Rovers, Cardiff City and Rotherham United player.

Law said: “I am obviously pleased to get someone of Leo’s calibre into the club. He is a major signing for us."

“He is big and strong and has scored goals at every level he has been at. He has a wealth of experience and I will be looking for him to also help bring our younger players on."

“He has had a lot of interest from other clubs including three in the Blue Square Premier but geographically some of them didn’t suit him at this stage of his career."

“We have fought off competition from other clubs to get his signature and we are delighted to have come out on top and done it.”

Stratford-born striker Fortune-West, 37, has commanded transfer fees of £400,000 in a career spanning many Football League and Conference clubs.

He was at Cambridge United and York City last season and came off the bench in the Blue Square Premier play-0ff final for Cambridge.

Leo is obviously the finished article and one of his former managers, Gary Peters, once tagged him 'Ronseal' because 'He does exactly what it says on the tin'.

Law’s son Josh also provided the club with a huge boost when he penned a one-year contract on Tuesday.

Josh Law, 18, had agreed terms a fortnight ago and finally committed himself to a second season with the Reds.

Law senior said: “I am not saying it just because he is my lad but he is an excellent signing for the club. He is a young player who has come through a tough period in his life."

“He showed great potential last season before tailing off at the end of the campaign. That was only due to being demotivated by his situation at Chesterfield and he probably went about things in the wrong way."

“I have had a few chats with him and I think he has really got the bit between his teeth now. He is out to prove a few people wrong."

“He has been spending plenty of time in the gym of late and if we can get him as fit and strong as he can be, he will prove himself to be way above this level which can only be good for the club."

“He is a contracted player now which will be good for us if he moves on. We have got ourselves a very good player.”
