Mansfield Town will start the 2008/09 season as a non-league club for the first time in their history. Despite an excellent run in the FA Cup during the 2007/08 campaign, going out at home to Middlesbrough in the 4th Round in front of the Match of the Day cameras, they finished second from bottom of League Two and along with Wrexham lost their place in the Football League.
Mansfield Town currently find themselves in limbo. Owner Keith Haslam wants to sell the club and the fans can't wait for new owners to come in. With the future ownership of the club in doubt manager Paul Holland can't sign new palyers and in fact dosen't know if he will still in charge when a new chairman arrives at Field Mill.
One serious threat to the future of Mansfield Town has now thankfully disappeared. Former owner of York City (who took the club into administration), businessman John Batchelor, wanted to take over at Field Mill and rename Mansfield Town Harchester Rovers after the fictional side in Sky One's Dream Team. The 'joke' proposal would have seen Mansfield playing in Red Bull's colours rather than their own under a sponsorship deal. The Club and the fans were rightly totally opposed to Batchelor's idea as this article on the local newspaper's website explains, click here to read the report.
There are grounds for optimism at Field Mill, despite the ownership situation the club are financially sound and can look at the example of Doncaster Rovers for inspiration.
Doncaster were themselves playing their football in the Confernece just three seasons ago and next seaon will take their place in the Championship alongside the likes of Wolves and Birmingham City after gaining promotion via the play-offs at Wembley in May.
