Daventry United, formerly called Ford Sports were founded in 1968. They joined the Central Northants Combination and enjoyed instant success, winning successive promotions to reach the Premier Division by 1970. The club expanded to three teams and moved to their present ground at Royal Oak Way in 1972.

Daventry United 1After establishing themselves among the Central Northants Combination's leadling clubs the Motormen progressed to the United Counties League in 1977, finishing Division Two runners-up in 1979 and gaining promotion.

The higher level initially proved a struggle and the only silverware won was the inaugural Fair Play Award in 1987. In 1993 the Motormen climbed to the top of the tree under the management of Gary Graham, with prolific marksman Neil Brough playing a starring role with over 50 goals.

Daventry United 3Royal Oak Way wasn't up to Premier standards but three years later a repeat title saw the Motormen promoted to the top flight. They were Northants Senior Cup runners-up in 1997 and twelve months later carried of their first major trophy, the Knockout Cup.

Daventry United 4Further success followed with Premier Division Championships under the management of Darren Wood in 2000 and Shane Geary two years later. The Motormen also became the last winners of the Benevolent Cup in 2000. The club enjoyed its best FA Vase run in 2005-06 reaching the Third Round.

They had their best run in the FA Cup in the 98/99 season when under the leadership of Richard Green and Kevin Flear they eventually went out to high-flying Conference League side Sutton United in a replay after holding them to a draw at Royal Oak Way.

Daventry United 7The club was relegated from the Premier Division in 2007 and changed their name to Daventry United.  The 2007/08 season saw United finish in 5th position in Division One with local rivals Daventry Town taking the title.
