Daventry Town were formed in 1886 and from those formative days right up until the 1960s the team was made up of local young players from the town. Daventry Town played in the Northampton Town League alternating between the 1st and 2nd Divisions with a Northants Junior Cup success in 1930 being a rare success.
In the 1960s Town were overshadowed by United Counties League side British Timken Athletic and later they slipped behind Ford Sports, the Daventry based works side. A move to the Northants Combination in 1987 saw a change in Daventry Town's fortunes under the management of Willie Barrett. The ex-Timken Athletic boss steered his side to successive wins in the Combination First and Premier Divisions and by 1989 Town were ready for a whole new adventure in the United Counties League.
Playing at the Hollow Ground in the town centre Daventry Town carried off the United Counties League Division One title at the first attempt and were Northants Junior Cup runners up but were denied promotion because their new Elderstubbs Ground was not yet up to Premier standards.
Twelve months later a runaway title success was rewarded with promotion< Town also won the Junior Cup beating Bugbrooke in the final. After a season of consolidation in the top flight, Town finished fifth in the Premier and were Knockout Cup runners up.
Manager Willie Barrett was headhunted by Racing Club Warwick and this signalled a decline in Town's fortunes, taking voluntary relegation to Division One for financial reasons. After narrowly missing out on promotion in the millenium season, new manager Craig Robson's side made no mistake in 2000-01 pipping Deeping to the Division One title on goal difference. The club's roller coaster ride continued back in the top flight and in 2004 they finished at the foot of the table. A repeat twelve months later saw Daventry Town return to Division One.
The club's survival came under threat in the 2005-06 season when a fire destroyed the Elderstubbs clubhouse and changing rooms, but a sponsorship deal with a mobile phone company enabled the club to continue and saw their ground renamed Communications Park.

2007/08 saw Town win the Division One title by 20 points from Peterborough Northern Star and promotion back to the Premier Division of the United Counties League. Major work was also carried out at their ground, including the installation of new floodlights. Ground improvements and investment are ongoing at Communications Park and the future is looking bright for this Northamptonshire club.
